Our home remodel

We purchased our home in 2000 and originally planned on flipping it within five years and selling it to build our forever home, but what happened was we fell in love with were the house was located, decided to have another baby, we put our roots down here and raised our children here and this house became our home.

Fast forward to almost twenty two years later and we finally got around to remodeling our home, crazy to think that it took us this long, in the picture above you can see how the tiny, outdated kitchen looked. we had originally sanded our kitchen cabinet doors and were going to reface them ourselves, but then our world got turned upside down when my husband was diagnosed with stage 3b lung cancer at only 38 years of age. We had to move to Atlanta and live out of a hotel while he received aggressive treatments. He has been in remission for almost five years now, To God be the glory!

We could now look toward the future with hope and decided to tackle this remodel once and for all

We started with the outside of the house first, we did new windows, siding, built porches, flower beds and had our driveway concreted, then the week of Christmas last year...we moved into our travel trailer (camper) in our yard, as the contractors started the demo. It wasn't always easy, but the final product was so worth it. I wanted to share some extra touches the we decided on that made my kitchen perfect to me, please enjoy the pictures and hopefully if you are planning a remodel, some of our ideas will give you some inspiration when doing yours.

This is where we removed the center support wall that separated the dining room and kitchen, this wall use to house the cook stove and dishwasher. We had a support beam put in from the attic above and island lights installed on the beam, we also pushed the layout of the cabinets back from their original space to give more room in the kitchen, we changed the whole configuration of the kitchen to better support our needs, this space is now bright and open and has a space for two kitchen garbage cans to be hidden out of sight, a large farmhouse sing and a dishwasher. All of my lower cabinets have pull out drawers to make getting things out super easy now and as we age. We went with a lighter less busy quartz counter top on the island, because we chose different color cabinets for it.
This area use to only have a small closet where the refrigerator now sits, we used the very tiny closet as a pantry, our cabinet designer showed us just how much better we could utilize this space and we love it. I did make a last minute change when I decided instead of doing an upper cabinet on the far right side, I wanted open shelving, my husband couldn't see what my plans were for this space and was hesitate, but he absolutely loves it now. This wall features pantry space around the entire refrigerator, as well as pull out shelving. A coffee bar with plenty of storage for other entertaining beverages below as well

This is the right side of our pantry space, you can see the pull out shelving in bottom, it makes putting things away so easy and also getting groceries from the back out super easy as well.
I purchased the can food racks, clear storage bins and the lazy Susans all on Amazon

Here is another picture of our coffee/beverage bar and the beautiful open shelving, we are still waiting on our under cabinet lighting to be installed, so that is why you can see the yellow wires underneath the second shelf 😅

Another thing that I knew I wanted when we did this remodel was organization, I ordered the spice jars and spice rack for drawers from Amazon and the cute labels from Etsy and got busy organizing all my spices, no more fumbling through the kitchen cabinet, knocking over everything trying to find the right spice, I love the ease of use and I love how nice it looks, also in this picture you can see my other quartz counter tops that we chose to use on the Alabaster White kitchen cabinets. We couldn't be happier with the way it looks.

We decided to go with a white subway tile on the wall and had the tile layer do a design over the stove, we also decided not to go back with a traditional stove and went with a gas cook top and two wall ovens and had a pot filler installed over the stove. we also had hand scraped hickory, hardwood floors installed throughout the entire house, with the exception of the utility room and bathrooms and we went with a white and gray Carrera tile in there

This is our dining room which is now open to our kitchen, we couldn't find a dining room table that we wanted, so we got some local furniture makers here in our hometown to make us one, we loved the way it turned out

I hope you enjoyed looking at our progress and hopefully it will give you some inspiration in remodeling your own home. Leave me a comment and let me know what you think 👇

Thanks so much!

For the love of Modern Farmhouse

Modern Farmhouse design is all the rage right now, thanks to Chip and JoAnna Gaines. I could sit and watch HGTV all day when their show use to come on, I loved watching them transform houses into cozy homes. I love the modern farmhouse design, because while it is warm and inviting with cozy details and a mix of modern with old woods and textiles, it is also bright and airy with clean lines. We are in the process of remodeling our 1960's ranch home and even though we have a ways to go and my wanted to share with you a few decor pieces that I have started with to begin my modern farmhouse journey.
In our dining room we are going to be taking out a wall to open up the kitchen to our dining area and installing all new cabinets, counter tops, appliances, etc. it should make the space feel more open and I plan on going with white cabinets and grey tones, as our house doesn't have a lot of natural light.
Here is our bar cart that I purchased online, it is part of our decor, but doubles as an adult beverage cart for entertaining or to hold kid friendly drinks and snack for birthday parties, it was one of my favorite purchases.
Our walls are currently sage green on top and red on bottom, I have future plans of removing all the chair railing trim and painting the walls a light grey and replacing the laminate flooring with real hardwood floors once we get our demo done and start on our kitchen.

When putting together a centerpiece for our dining room table, I wanted something simple, but inviting. I tried several different options, until I decided on this one. I love this one because I think it looks nice, but I also love it because it cost next to nothing to put together. The wooden tray was on clearance at our local department store for $8, the candles and candle sticks as well as the wooden "home" sign came from a local dollar store and the faux plant came from another discount overstock seller, the total centerpiece arrangement was less than $40, now that's a win.win in my book!

I am always looking for my next great find!
Show me what great Modern Farmhouse finds you have came across!

Quick & Easy DIY Baby Blankets

I have exciting news! I'm going to be a Mimi!!! That's right my first born is becoming a mother, so soon in fact, today is her actual due date [eek!] but of course here we are still waiting, she hasn't dilated any and hasn't had much pain at all so, we are going in for another ultrasound tomorrow and they are going to schedule an inducement date. They are estimating the baby weighing close to eight pounds, but we shall see.

In preparation for the arrival of our first grand baby, I've been looking up easy baby blankets to make and came across a few great ideas that I wanted to pass along to you, I am also currently working on a hand crocheted baby blanket, but it is taking me some time. I wanted to find some projects that I could make quicker and the internet did not disappoint, all of these use the same principle, just some different sizing and of course different fabric ideas, whether you are looking to make a cotton, fleece or minky blanket there is easy step by step instructions that even the most inexperienced person behind the sewing machine should be able to make one of these.
Give them a try and if you like, send me a picture of your finished blanket, I'd love to see what fabric choices you use.

This blanket is super cute, I love the woodsy design, perfect for a little boy. This receiving blanket is the perfect blanket for swaddling your little guy, visit Shelly at Coral + Co. Modern Sewing to get the tutorial to make this cute blanket in 10 minutes!!!!

Minky Baby Blankets are one of my favorites, because they are so soft and warm and are the perfect blanket to lay over your infant's car carrier when taking them out of the car and into the store or house to keep the cold winter wind off of them or a great blanket to lay them on for some tummy time, they are just super soft and cuddly and wonderfully warm.

To find out just how easy it is to make your own minky baby blanket, head on over to suzyquilts
to get a detailed instructions!

I hope that you visit these lovely sites suggested and make your own baby blankets, either for your little one or to give as a gift, now, I've got to get busy making my soon to be grandson his first blanket from his Mimi.

See ya soon,

Finding the perfect Planner

Hello there.
How many of you use a planner to keep your life, finances,
blog, etc. in order?
I can't live without my Create365 Happy Planner, now there are many planners out on the market and I am in no way affiliated with the good folks who created the Happy Planner, nor am I getting any compensation for telling you about it, I just wanted to share what I love about it and give you my honest opinion/review.

First of all, I began using a Happy Planner last year and quickly decided that it was the product of choice for me, so when December of 2017 rolled around, I began my search for my next Happy Planner for 2018.
What is a Happy Planner you might ask? Well, it is a beautiful planner that allows you to decorate it with the cutest stickers, add extras like pocket folders, pen holders, etc. It has a monthly layout so you can see the entire month at a glance, but also has a unique layout for each week that allows you to customize each day by morning, mid-day and evening plans/events.
Here is a glimpse at mine.

The inside of each tabbed cover is beautifully detailed and each one different!

There is plenty of space to add stickers and embellishments to plan your week out easily, each day has room for morning, mid-day and evening plans.

Here is just a small sampling of all the great stickers available for your planner!

I also use my Silhouette Cameo and it's print & cut feature to create my own stickers and pinterest has a ton of free planner printables to chose from! The sky is the limit, here are a few sites that I have found that offer free planner printables that I just love!

 1. pinkpixelgraphics.com
2. Burlapandblue.com
3. Freeprettythingsforyou.com
4. Planninginspired.com
5. Planneronelove.com

Just to name a few, so many more can be found by simply searching Pinterest!
I also love checking out Michaels and Hobby Lobby for their latest collections as well as downloading or printing their 40% off coupon to use on one full price item, who doesn't love a good deal? Am I right? Of course!
Here are just a few extra's you can get to personalize your planner even more

How Cancer has changed our lives

Welcome back, I know it's been a while....My family and I have gone through a lot of changes since February of this year. To start of telling you about our journey...I have to back up...November of 2017, my husband (age 39) started having night sweats and feeling tired all the time, I encouraged him after a while to go to the doctor to first test his testosterone levels and if that came back good, have his thyroid checked (those where the only two things that I suspected could possibly be the culprit at his young age) never suspecting the worst.
By the time he went to the doctor, his lymph nodes in his lower neck had swollen, the doctor didn't run any scans, did blood work to check his testosterone levels and gave him an inhaler, telling him it was probably just a bug he caught and that he should be better within the week...we were awaiting the test results to come back on the testosterone levels when my husband called me and said he was in horrible pain and needed me to come home, I took him to our local Emergency room about midnight after the pain didn't stop, they ran a CT scan without contrast thinking it was kidney stones....no stones found, they said it was probably viral and they gave him a pain shot and some nausea meds and sent him home, the next day the pain started all over again and began increasing, I drove him to the E.R. the next town over, because it is a little better than our small town E.R. They ran a CT scan there this time with contrast dye of his lower abdomen...they told him that they found an area on his spleen that didn't look right, but because he had been in a severe wreck several years ago, it could be scar tissue from that wreck, to have an ultrasound down and to come back in 6 weeks for another one to compare the two, to see if there is any change. Now, at this point...we are thinking "Maybe it is just viral and  maybe we are over thinking this thing" they sent him home with a prescription for pain pills, the following day was better, the pain pills kept the pain at bay. The following day, I return from the grocery store to find him in unbearable pain, he could hardly stand up, he told me "I don't know what is going on, but they are missing something!" I had our older daughter get her little brother and take him home with her and we headed out for the next best hospital in Nashville, Tennessee which is about an hour and a half away. When we arrived at their emergency department, we had to wait for over an hour with my husband in so much pain, he couldn't even sit, finally they got us back and started listening to our story of how many emergency room visits, CT scans, etc....the doctor listened to the symptoms that my husband had been having, he ordered more testing....he came in and said, I am fairly certain that you have Lymphoma, but we are still waiting on the rest of the test to confirm. Our lives stopped for a moment, we looked at each other with tears running down our faces, I knew in that moment that our lives and our children and family's lives would never be the same. The doctor came back in after a little while and said, "The tests are back, it isn't Lymphoma like we thought, I'm sorry, but you have lung cancer!"
LUNG CANCER???!!!!!
In my head I was thinking, "Is that worse?" "What does that mean?" "Was Lymphoma better?"
I finally choked back my tears and said, "Ok, what can we do?, what do we do for it?"
He told us he was going to admit him to keep him comfortable, run more test and we'd meet with an Oncologist the following day. We learned that the pain had come from a blood clot that was formed by the type of cancer he had, it caused his blood to thicken and resulted in a massive blood clot that thankfully went to his spleen instead of his heart or brain or he would of died instantly. That is what the other hospital was seeing in their CT scan, but failed to recognize it.

We didn't tell anyone that first night, we stayed up and talked and mostly cried the entire night, it was unbearably painful and numbing all at the same time, we were in a state of shock,  it was the longest night of our lives, the pain of uncertainty and what we were going to do and how we were going to do it was overwhelming...how would we tell our children. The following day, it was confirmed by the Oncologist (Cancer Specialist) that he had stage 3b Adenocarcinoma of the Lung, that had also spread to the lymph nodes in his neck and chest. we called for his Mother and Step-Father to come to the hospital, so we could tell them, to prepare them to be supportive of our children when we told them.
It was a hard conversation to have, but I think trying to remain calm and strong enough to tell our children was the worst, Our daughter is 22 and our son is 12, we told them together, we tried our best to answer their questions with optimism, even though we had no idea what we were facing or how this story was going to end.
After returning home and going back to meet with Oncology team, it was decided that they would do 4 rounds of chemo (once a week for 4 weeks) and if he didn't respond to that, he would be gone in 6 months to a year. I was mad, he was young, text book perfect health before this cancer diagnosis and we weren't giving up that easily. We started with his first round of Chemo, within a three week period, he began having major DVT's almost filling his right leg with blood clots, then he threw multiple ones to his lungs, which Thankfully were small enough that it didn't obstruct his breathing completely, we had to have an emergency procedure to put in an IVC filter, it is designed to catch any large blood clots from entering the heart, lungs or brain and it isn't without it's risks to, at this point, we were just trying to keep him alive to fight the cancer, it was overwhelming and scary,  We finally were able to get him stable and  home long enough to start looking into other facilities that could do more that what Nashville was planning on doing. We tried get into MD Anderson in Texas as it was rated #1, but because he had already started chemo, he would have to complete and fail all four rounds before they could accept him into their program, we didn't have to time to waste, we contacted The Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Atlanta, Georgia and they accepted him, even though it was out of our insurances network, they told us that they had assistance to help pay for the costs and that it could possibly cover all of what our insurance wouldn't pay.  We decided to travel to Georgia for a consultation, meet with the team of Oncologist and hear what their plan was and make a decision to seek treatment options with them or stay with Nashville.
After, being at CTCA and meeting their doctors, it was evident to us that he could get the best care there, They don't just treat the cancer, they treat the whole body and that was important to us both.
They decided to do 32 rounds of radiation and 5 rounds of chemo, we would have to stay at a hotel in the Metro Atlanta area for 7  1/2 weeks, now came the hard part (not that any of this was easy)  our 12 year old son was still in school, and our 22 year old daughter worked 12 hours shifts at a job she hadn't been at long, so it was feasible for her to take off,  we made the tough decision to leave our son with my husband's mother and head to Georgia without any of our children to start this next chapter in our journey. We were able to come home a couple of times and spend the weekend with our kids, but it was a short, turn around trip...our driving to and from would usually take 6 hours or more with the wonderful Atlanta traffic (nightmare)
At this point in our journey, after countless bumps in the road that I am leaving out...
as of right now, my husband is in remission!!!!! That's right REMISSION!
With that being said, they told us it would eventually come back and probably somewhere else, The grace of God has gotten us this far and I am praying that it never returns or that if it has to, that it is many, many years from now. I want to grow old with this man, we were high school sweethearts, married at 19  (he was 18) I cannot imagine my life without him.

We return at the end of this month for another scan to make sure he is still in remission, he still has bad days, his health isn't great, the chemo and radiation has been hard on his body and organs, but he is able to work some and do some things around that house and for that I am grateful, not for my benefit, but for the simple fact that he is still here and is still able......to be continued.............

If you have cancer and would like to share your story, leave me a comment. I'd love to hear what your experience has been. God Bless
#Godisgood #cancersucks #adenocarcinomawareness

**Update May 3, 2018**
We return to CTCA in Atlanta this coming week for follow up scans, we've been doing this every three months, for the past year, if these scans come back good, then we will be able to start going every six months...this has been a long, hard journey...there has been some wonderful blessings as a result of this cancer though and I'd like to share those as well, first of all to be diagnosed with stage 3b-4 lung cancer and given six months to a year to live, to being in remission within a few months is a blessing in of itself (Praise God) This diagnosis made us stop and think about how we were living our lives, how we were failing ourselves in our own marriage by not spending quality time together, taking each other for granted, etc. We started going to church together as a family, as a result, both of our children accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and were saved (Praise God)  We slowed down, stopped arguing over things that didn't really matter and started spending more quality time together, making memories, taking pictures and just loving each other. We are not promised tomorrow, we don't know how this chapter in our lives will end, but I am thankful that we are writing "our story" together. To be continued................
